Gunnera in Winter
Oil on Panel
28.6 cm x 40.5
Unframed
In the tranquil beauty of Cockington Country Park, I regularly stop to study the large Gunnera Leaf in various stages of life. This painting spanned several sessions to capture a poignant moment.
Like sentinels fallen in battle, colossal leaves lay strewn across the boggy ground, their once-proud stature now humbled by the passage of time as another winter draws in.
I've developed a fondness for these prehistoric-looking plants. They have become a recurring theme in my work, a series that evolves with the changing seasons. Each painting tells a unique story of these magnificent leaves in various stages of life.
There was a solemnity to this scene. The Gunnera leaves, though withered and seemingly defeated, retained a haunting beauty in their vulnerability. The subdued palette of winter, with its muted earthy tones, served as a backdrop to this delicate portrayal of life's tenacity.
